The Seat of Stillness and the Sound of Silence 고요의 자리와 침묵의 소리

Our towns and cities are loud with the sounds of perpetual endeavour. The car is much less a servant and more a tyrant, technology less a tool and more a dependency, the clock is less a measure and more our master. People rush from meeting to meeting, from keyboard to console, from shop to cinema with less time than ever to give each other. Increasingly, we fill the urge to escape the pressures that seem to assail us with activity and noise that we believe will relax us, but more often only further distracts our mind and agitates our heart. There comes a point however, when we recognise an inner call that pulls us back towards simplicity. A feeling tugs our heart, and at the core of this feeling is a power more magnetic than anything that industry or city life have to offer – the simple healing power of silence. 우리가 살고 있는 마을이나 도시는 끊임없이 애쓰는 시끄러운 소음으로 가득하다. 우리를 도와야 할 자동차는 우리들 위에 군림하는 폭군에 더 가깝고, 수단이어야 할 기술에 우리가 의존해서 종속되어 있으며, 시계는 측정을 위한 기계라기보다 우리의 주인이 된 셈이다. 이 회의에서 저 모임으로, 자판에서 콘솔로, 상점에서 영화관으로 사뭇 바삐 달리느라 사람끼리 서로 눈 마주칠 시간은 과거 그 어느 때보다도 적다. 이런 활동과 소음들이 우리를 편안하게 이완시켜 주리라고 믿었건만, 도리어 너무 자주 우리 마음을 더 혼란스럽게 만들고 심정을 뒤흔들어놓아서, 이 모든 압력에서 벗어나고 싶은 충동이 우리를 사로잡는다. 어쨌거나 어느 순간에 이르면 내면의 부름이 우리를 단순한 소박함으로 다시 끌어당긴다. 심장을 잡아당기는 어떤 느낌이 들고, 그 느낌의 중심에는 사업이나 도회생활의 그 어느 것도 우리에게 줄 수 없는 강력한 자석 같은 힘, 침묵의 치유하는 힘이 깃들어 있다.

 

Silence is that profound aspect of creation that evokes ideas of infinity, the grandeur of our spirit and the possibility of an authentic and deep personal peace. Silence should never be regarded as merely nothingness or emptiness. It is the very ground of creation and the ultimate source of creativity. A composer knows that the silences between the notes are as much a part of the symphony as the notes themselves. The painter begins with both an empty canvas and a quiet mind. It is the unseen silence of the canvas that will hold the artists creative ｅxpression together. It is also an unseen and unfelt silence that holds together canvas that is the multidimensional backdrop of our daily lives. 침묵은 창조의 심오한 측면이며, 무한성, 우리 정신의 원대함, 진정하며 깊숙한 개인적 평화의 가능성 등의 개념을 떠올리게 한다. 침묵을 단순한 무(無) 혹은 공허함으로 여겨서는 절대 안 된다. 침묵은 창조의 바탕이며, 창의성의 궁극적인 원천이다. 작곡가는 음표와 음표 사이 휴지(休止)에 흐르는 정적이 음표들 못지 않게 중요한 교향곡의 일부라는 것을 안다. 화가는 빈 화폭과 고요한 마음 두 가지를 갖추고 작업을 시작한다. 화가의 창의적 표현을 품고 있는 것은 눈에 보이지 않는 캔버스의 정적이다. 또한 다차원적인 우리 일상생활이라는 캔버스를 하나로 묶어주는 것 역시 눈에 보이지 않고 귀에 들리지 않는 침묵이다.
